PostSubject: Identity of Baltic states   Sat Jun 23, 2007 12:12 am

There are three of baltic states: Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia, seems like most of the world identyfy those states as one unit, but in fact is there any identity of balts? Seeems like latley these three countries are becoming more concurents then friends. That can be noticed in some aspects of foriegn policy of thses countries, like Estoniana polititians sometimes anounce thatthey are more nordic country then baltic state, or Lithuania has moreinterests within Poland, not comepetitive to speak about Latvian situation. Seems that these countries agreeonly on one question, on attitude towards Russia. So it would be nice to hear your opinion is it only thing that unite us, or there are much more relations between those countries(i am talking about any kind of relations, cultural, economics, education, traveling, having friends from those countries etc). And how do youthink should those countries deepen their relations, like to have common possition not only towards Russia but also for example on supporting eatch other in the EU destion making and so on.
P.S. I personaly think that these relations are not strong enought and should be much stronger ties among averige people (for e.g. students, teachers, professors, farmersand so on....) not only in political level.

Malmal, I would like if all of you had tighter ties with us, Hungarians Smile
When Vytautas Landsbergis came to Hungary to speak at the protests when 250 000 Hungarians gathered on 15th March in Budapest some months ago - well that was a good start Wink

It's true that people should communicate more. After all, an average Estonian unfortunately really doesn't know much about Latvia and we know even less about Lithuania (as it's further). There should be more chances of communication to the Balticians.

But the good thing is that our defence forces are already having quite a good cooperation when we are talking about military stuff. Of course Latvia's army is totally screwed up which means that if war should come, Estonians and Lithuanians were the ones who were forced to help them. But at least we are together.

yea as far as i know the most comunication are about military questions. at least it is good that our countries though about that and about common defense if there's a need. anyway i hope that there won't be such need.
and maybe with a time people willstart comunicate much more in cultural educational and other levels

We have much in common in history, especially the 20th century.

Lithuanians and Latvians are really similar (eg. language) and Estonians are more different, but it's nothing as all these 3 countries history in 20th century is very similar. It's a pity that instead of supporting each other in EU and things like that we're competing... Probably that's like in family brothers or sisters competing to show that he/she is better than others Very Happy oh well, i hope there'll be more cooparation in the future. In my opinion the thing with a nuclear power station is really good Wink

In what sense you compete? Could you provide some example?

when i wrote this i thought about period between WW1 and WW2. It was quite hard for Baltic states to be recognized. UNO didn't want to accept us at first, especially Lithuania because of variance with Poland. If Baltic states would have supported each other, maybe it all would have been easier. the Union of Baltic states was signed only in 1934 (it was about to coordinate foreign policy and help each other), but even after The Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact nothing was done.
